Home Schooling

Mary Whitsale writes in Families & Kids

My husband and I are thinking about relocating to Sao Paulo Brazil. At present, we are home-schooling our children in stead of sending them to public or private educational facilities. Can someone tell me whether educating out children from home is possible in Sao Paulo?

It is my understanding that homeschooling is not legally possible in Brazil at this time BUT that there is a possible change in the law in progress. Please, check with the local municipality when you make your choice where to live in Sao Paulo.

As duasfilhas mentioned, you may not be allowed to educate your kids home, had better check with authorities (Secretaria de Educação and Conselho Tutelar), for I am not sure about. But you could provide international home schooling programs to your kids in parallel, if not on an exclusive basis.

Hope I have helped. I just wanna let you know that middle and upper class people almost never let their kids attend public schools nowadays. Violence, lack of structure and human resources (educators, teachers, furniture, libraries, computers, etc) and other factors make people sacrifice their domestic budget and enroll their kids in private schools. I am really sorry about that, I am 52 and had the wonderful chance of attending a public school in SP from kindergarten to high school, receiving the best education one could get. But that was from 1963 to 1976...

Thanks Regina. I understand as I attended NYC public schools from K-12 and had a great education and never experienced the sort of things we see on TV. That's one of the reasons we've home schooled plus the fact that we have one child who has some challenges. Private school in SP won't be a problem, but we want to be sure our special needs child gets as much as we've been giving.

I think you should read this article about a school in Butantã, near the University of São Paulo main campus. A dear friend of mine, a very competent children psychologist, has a son who suffers from a genetic disorder and needs special education and she was relieved when she found this public school in SP that represents the sucessful and uncommon side of revolutionary educational experiences based on the famous Portuguese Escola da Ponte.

Wish you luck.

Amazing article and truly, I'm very appreciative of your attention to this. I hope your friend's child is doing well.
